Baked Alaska

Ice cream on cake covered in toasted meringue. Dramatic and delicious!

  • 1 round sponge cake layer
  • 1 quart ice cream (any flavor)
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp vanilla

    Place cake on oven-safe plate.

    Mound ice cream on cake; freeze until solid.

    Beat egg whites and cream of tartar to soft peaks.

    Add sugar gradually; beat to stiff peaks. Add vanilla.

    Cover ice cream completely with meringue.

    Bake at 500°F for 3-4 minutes until golden.

    Serve immediately.

  • Freeze very well before adding meringue
  • Seal meringue completely to insulate
