Braided Challah Bread

Beautiful golden braided egg bread. Soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for Shabbat.

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp yeast
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg for wash
  • Sesame or poppy seeds

    Mix flour, sugar, yeast, salt.

    Add eggs, oil, water; knead 10 minutes.

    Rise 1 1/2 hours.

    Divide into 3 ropes; braid.

    Rise 45 minutes.

  6. 6

    Brush with egg; sprinkle seeds.

  7. 7

    Bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes.

  • Keep braids even for uniform bread
  • Makes incredible French toast the next day
