Dobos Torte

Hungarian cake with thin sponge layers, chocolate buttercream, and caramel top.

  • 6 eggs, separated
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • For buttercream: 6 oz dark chocolate, 1 cup butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tbsp cocoa
  • For caramel: 1/2 cup sugar

    Beat yolks and half the sugar until thick.

    Beat whites with remaining sugar; fold together.

    Fold in flour.

    Bake in thin layers.

    Make chocolate buttercream.

    Stack layers with buttercream.

    Make caramel; pour over top layer.

    Cut into slices before caramel hardens.
