German Chocolate Cake

Chocolate layers with coconut pecan frosting. Not actually German!

  • 4 oz German sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • For frosting: 1 cup evaporated milk, 1 cup sugar, 3 egg yolks, 1/2 cup butter, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 1/3 cups coconut, 1 cup pecans

    Melt chocolate in water; cool.

    Cream butter and sugar; add eggs and vanilla.

    Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk.

    Stir in chocolate.

    Bake in three pans at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.

    Make frosting: cook milk, sugar, yolks, butter until thick.

    Add vanilla, coconut, pecans. Cool; spread between layers.
